Kaboom!

Airplanes have always fascinated me. While I don’t have the aptitude or eyesight to be a pilot, I’ve always loved airplanes, fighter jets, and basically flying. For a while I had an Area 88 obsession and dreamed of being a combat pilot. Don’t have the stomach for that one. I traveled a lot as a kid, and I think that by 15 I’d been on more planes than a lot of pilots. Freaky no?

Today was day one of the Air and Water Show and 2 million Chicago crackheads sat out on the shore of Lake Michigan and watched planes for up to five hours. I only lasted two, but I was flying solo, and didn’t have enough water. There’s a joke to be made there, I’m sure of it.

Anyway, this means that I totally missed the boat catching on fire! Damn! Oh! Someone’s boat caught on fire. I can’t find a news link, though.

News that caught my attention:

Sniper-Style Shootings Reported In W. Virginia – A friend of mine lives in DC and was freaked/offended when CSI: Miami (aka The cheap knockoff CSI that sucks ass enough to be canceled by TWoP) had a sniper episode. I can only imagine how this spooks her. West Virginia police are investigating two separate sniper-style shootings at two different gas stations Thursday night, but right now the police are not confirming that the shootings are connected.

Ohio transmission lines blamed – I’m from Cleveland. May I say ‘whoops’? Three power lines went down, and that somehow reversed the flow of power (it runs clockwise, you see, around the Erie Loop) which caused a blackout. Now, that shouldn’t have shut down everything, but to quote a RPG char of mine ‘Fuckin Cleveland. I knew it was the Hellmouth.’ Thank you.

Flaw Hobbles Computer Worm – The Blaster worm (which only newer Microsoft computers can get) was created to presumably cause havoc to Microsoft by exploiting a flaw in the OS. Trouble is? It has a flaw too. Until now, infected computers would reboot without warning or lose Internet connections. Tonight, the worm will cause infected computers to start connecting to Microsoft’s patch site (windowsupdate.com) to flood the site and prevent patch downloads. That site is a redirect to the real site, and as a coworker of mine speculated, Microsoft is simply going to kill the redirect and stay up. Now, this will still hose up net traffic (if say your neighbor has the virus and his computer is trying to connect to the nonexistent site, it will create traffic for YOU), but not as much.

Woman found dead in trash can – This is SO a CSI episode! The body of a female (13 to 16 years old) was found stuffed in a trashcan behind her home in the 800-block of South Keeler. Police were called to the West Side alley when the homeowner took out her garbage around 10:30 a.m. Saturday and discovered the victim, who was fully clothed. The victim reportedly had a rope around her neck and a plastic bag over her head.
