Work aside, I’ve been trying to think up somethign to write for the mailing list I wrote Bugged for. That would be Hint Of the Week, and if Yahoo! wasn’t blocked from work, I’d link up here.
A lot of the reason I want to write again is that so many coworkers (who happen to be on that list) were amazed that I was so literate and wrote so un-geekily, that I’ve aquired some bizzare accolades. It was even mentioned in my annual review (went very well, thank you) that I wrote about a technical topic in layman’s terms well enough that people who’d never used a Mac before were able to understand.
Part of me wants to write, again, about Macintosh. Then I think I want to broaden my topics, to show that I know more than Mac (not that my coworkers would be shocked, I work on the XP rollout). There’s internet things I know about, there’s Windows things I know about, there’s PDA/MP3 players I knwo about…
So here’s my potential topics, in no order.
• Webpage design/layout including ‘language’ (HTML/CSS etc)
• Webpage hosting. What to look for, what you need, how to know the difference between need and want, and prediciting growth. Should you use your ISP, etc.
• Email apps, how to pick which one to use and what to configure so you’re less likely to catch a bug (Windows and Mac)
• Macintosh’s MacExpo and my thoughts on that.
Looking at that last topic, I’ve realized how dissapointed I am in the MacExpo and how relieved. I am thirlled about the new MacMini, which for $500 is a great deal and a lot of my coworkers who are PC users are thinking of getting one. iWork is a dissapointment for the lack of spreadsheet tools. And the iPod shuffle … makes me glad I did pick up my iPod Photo, since now I know my new toy isn’t already obsolete.
But it was a whimper of an expo. Nothing jumped out and said ‘Buy me!’ … which probably makes my SO happy.
