Oops, Sony did it again

A chat about Sony and the DRM.

Did you see the news?

Uh. Maybe? I’ve been busy.

Sony’s got to shell out beaucoup bucks for DRM!

Oooh, you mean the fall out from a couple years ago? Hang on … I’m feeling really old now.

I know! And I’m not asking about a Zune.

Good. I’ve got divided opinions about that one. So yeah, Sony! They have to pony up a million five in fines, and pay off California and Texas consumers who had computer problems after the software was installed! I like the precedent.

Me too. It’s nice to see at least one state getting the right idea that if we wouldn’t let someone into our homes to change our stove from gas to electric, we wouldn’t let them on our computers either.

Interesting analogy. Hey, you’re getting better at this computer thing!

Thanks! And did you hear how the Attorney General is making them pay four and a quarter mill to pay back the money 40 states put in trying to sort this out? AND a bunch of other states want the Cali/Tex deal?

Justice. The only kind they know! And Sony’s finally catching up on the whole podcast thing, too.

… What?

Aahh, just when I thought you didn’t need me anymore!

Sony is licensing music for use in podcasts. Kind of. They’re letting DaimlerChrysler and Ford pay a flat fee for the use of music for a year. No word on what happens after the year: do the podcasts become illegal or can they just not make new ones? But this holds promise for at home casts.
