Mnemonics

A mnemonic is an abbreviation that is chosen to be easy for humans to remember. Generally it’s a combination of letters and/or numbers we use becuase we can’t remember a long list of things. For the most part, I don’t use them. I will say that looking some up made me laugh, since I’d never heard of half of them.

My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. I’ve never used this one. And given the fact that Pluto’s not a planet anymore, I think I’m glad. Of course, Uranus was ‘Your anus’ when I was in school and now it’s ‘Your a nus’ which isn’t as fun. Apparently people are replacing ‘Nine Pizzas’ with ‘Nachos’ now. Sounds like a digestive adventure. I miss Pluto already.

King Phillip Came Over For Good Sushi
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. Again, I don’t use this one.

ROY G. BIV
He’s the color quaddie- er … Right. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. I use this one, but that’s because I like the Roy G. Biv song. It’s a crap song, but it amused me.

Every Good Boy Does Fine
Becuase if you can’t remember the Trebel Clef… FACE is for the open, or ‘face’, spaces. whatever. Okay, the thing is I just remember that it starts with the line being E and then it goes EFGABCDEF.

HOMES
Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior. The great lakes. I actually use this, but in a weird way. I remember the names, but I use it cause it amuses me. It’s more a case of me thinking up the names and then saying ‘Oh right, homes.’

Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November: All the rest have thirty-one, Except for February, which is fucked up and on leap year has twenty-nine
I don’t need to point out the lack of ending rhyme. Thing of it was I couldn’t remember the end of the poem, so normally I’ll make it up. This is just what came to mind today. I use this one. A lot. Months are hard.

ID10T
This one’s not a mnemonic but it’s an easy way to say, out loud, someone is an idiot. You say ‘It’s an ID ten T error.’
