After the events of my computer melting and the new one arriving, I’ve finally gotten the New Guy up to where I want it. The apps are in the right place, the software is registered, and everything is working fine.
Along comes Apple with new releases. Per usual, I get a new computer and a month later a new OS comes out and I have to shell out for it. Oh, and I will for Leopard. But right now, they gave us iTunes 7.
A lot of people have bitched that it’s cartoon style, with weird graphics. I think they forgot that iTunes used to have a purple icon, then the green, and now blue. The blue matches Mail and Safari, so I’m happy. I like the blue. It reminds me ‘Oh yeah! This will be weird when I open it up!’ Until I’m used to the icon, I’m probably not used to the app changes.
I still have my old, dead, computer authorized. I don’t like that, but it’s DEAD. What can I do? I’d like to go in and un-authorize computers by choice, but they don’t have that option. Yet. I think it’d be useful, but I don’t know how they’d be able to tell the average user what computer is what. I mean, I’m willing to bet that 90% of users still name their Hard Drive ‘Macintosh HD’. And no, I don’t. Also, they probably have the same IP address, so the only way to tell the difference is the Mac Address, and god knows no one knows what THAT is.
Maybe they could use ‘Last accessed the iTunes Store on…’ and then you could best guess it. “Gee, my old computer died on Sept 1, and there’s only one computer that’s used iTunes Store since then. I should deactivate the old one!” And if you mess up, you can just reactivate the new one. Bam.
Still, it’s not perfect. It requires people to think, and I love Mac, but they really do aim for ‘People who can’t think but need computers’ a lot of the time.
On the iTunes store side of things, I noticed you can download the last episodes from last season of Grey’s Anatomy, Lost and Desperate Housewives, plus a ‘summary’ episode. It’s free, but only for the first million downloads. Kind of neat.
