I am in full support of freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest.
I understand why the ACLU supports the freedom of people I detest. This is part of what it means to truly be an American. To protect the people I hate to have the right to say things I hate.
The First Amendment states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
They were not peaceful, and they did not intend to be so.
The Nazi party, calling themselves white nationalists and alt-right, have violated the tacit agreement for a peaceful protest. They came to Charlottesville armed. They came in armor. They came with weapons and they came to hurt.
These are the actions of hate.
These are Nazis. They chanted “blood and soil” and “Jews will not replace us.” They carried the swastika. They screamed “Heil Hitler” and, yes, “Heil Trump.”
They killed a woman.
These are terrorists plain and simple. These are fascists. These are Nazis. Calling them Nazis didn’t make them so, them carrying a flag and chanting those words did. And every day, every moment you do not stand against them, you stand for them.
That’s exactly how this works.
