While I’m as horrified as the next person to find that some of the more hard core right wingers are shooting at our government, I actually feel that, in some small part, this is a good thing.
Oh don’t get me wrong, in no way at all do I support terrorist acts. And yes, calling for the assassination of your senator is a terrorist attack. Heck, I think that PETA is practically a terrorist group with their throwing red-paint on people. You are attacking people. That’s terrorism. I know it terrifies me. But the thing is … the more crazy the Tea Party people get, the more of a wake up call this is for the rest of us.
See, crazy is one of those things that can either spiral out of control or can be the catalyst to spur us on to better things. This level of crazy makes the left wing stand up and go ‘Wait a second, this is nuts!’ And you know what? The lefters need that sort of kick in the pants. WE (the left, the right and everyone else) have been idiots for a long time, and we tried to make things all fair and happy sunshine bunnies, only to finally be at the point where we realized that’s not working, and it’s time to just shove the law down people’s throats. People who were shoving laws we opposed down our throats for the last eight years. Not to be all ‘Quid pro quo’ about it, but they had this coming.
This is the point where I say ‘Some of my best friends are Republicans.’ Heck, some of my friends ARE Tea Party Members. But they’re the sort I like. They’re in the Tea Party because they want the government to stop meddling in their life. You know what? Me too! That’s why I’m a Libertarian. We have too much meddling, too much government, too much hands-in-pies. And yes, I think that’s a great part of what’s wrong right now. But my friends? Don’t think that shooting people is an answer.
The GOP is about to hit a wall. They have a couple choices. One of which is to silently approve of the scare-tactics. But see … they can’t. You know what happens when people start shooting each other over politics? A war. Look at Israel if you don’t believe me. Hell, look at the War Between the States (aka Civil War if you were born North of the Mason-Dixon). History shows that as soon as we start protesting violently, we get a war. Every country has learned this lesson, usually a few times. It’s been a few hundred years since the US learned it, and as gut-wrenchingly terrifying as it might be, we may be up for a remedial lesson in politics.
How bad are we talking about?
In Wichita, someone broke the window of a county Democratic Party headquarters with a brick that had “No to Obama” and “No ObamyCare” written on it. In response to the passage of health care reform, Tea Party activists have upped their rhetoric to include despicable threats against children. Minority Leader John Boehner said of his ‘neighbor’ Rep. Steve Driehaus (Ohio) “He may be a dead man. He can’t go home to the west side of Cincinnati.” The proclaimed ‘Pro Lifers’ are sending death threats to Democratic Congressman Bart Stupak, for crying out loud!
This post would be pages upon pages if I linked to every bit of insanity, but you get the idea. Some people have wandered right over the edge, past crazy-cat-lady-land and well into ‘Put this guy in a padded room!’ insanity.
So to my friends who hate this so-called ‘Socialist health care system’ and despise Obama and are pissed off at their reps who voted against their wishes, I have some advice. Put down the bricks and guns and pick up a pen. Start a campaign to vote out the people you don’t like, and vote in the people you do. Find your words and use them, but take a moment to research what you’re saying before you spew rhetoric. Just shouting angry words helps no one.
And to my fellow Left Wing, liberal, socialist friends? Same advice, people. The same damn advice. Keep voting out people you don’t like, replace them with people you do. Read, understand and don’t stoop to terrorist tactics.
We’re better than this, all of us, all parties, all beliefs, all people. We shouldn’t resort to throwing insults and bricks. As soon as the first person dies from all this, we all lose, and we will not be in a good place as a nation. Let’s stop it before it gets out of hand. So take the horror for a fact, wake up, and change the world to a better place. We all want that.
